Signs Doctor Prescribed the Wrong Prescription

December 14, 2018 by Cardinal LifeCare Consulting

doctor prescribed wrong prescriptionAt best, prescribing the wrong drug may delay recovery, but at worst, a prescription error could lead to severe health complications or even death. If you’re an attorney involved in a medical malpractice lawsuit because a doctor prescribed the wrong prescription, you may benefit from expert witness services or life care planning. We provide both at Cardinal LifeCare Consulting.

As a member of the American Association of Legal Nurse Consultants and the National Alliance of Certified Legal Nurse Consultants, we have the qualifications and experience to assist with your medical malpractice case. Call 724-487-0519 today to learn more.

Let’s explore a few common signs that a doctor prescribed the wrong prescription:

The Patient Had an Allergic Reaction

Prescription medication often contains ingredients that can trigger severe allergic reactions. As part of accepted standards of practice, doctors are required to ask patients about any allergies before prescribing these medications. If a doctor proceeds to prescribe a medication containing an ingredient a patient is allergic to – despite knowing patient’s allergies – this may be grounds for a medical malpractice claim. Doctors or healthcare facilities may also be held liable for damages if the patient is not asked about his or her allergies before a medication is prescribed.

The Patient Received the Wrong Dosage

A dosage that is too high can cause severe health complications that may lead to pain and suffering, additional injuries, or even death. A dosage that is too low may be insufficient to treat the patient’s symptoms, causing his or her condition to worsen.

To win a medical malpractice claim involving the wrong medication dosage, an attorney must show compelling evidence that another practitioner in the same position would not have prescribed the wrong dosage. This is where a medical expert witness from Cardinal LifeCare Consulting may be able to help.
