What Services Does a Critical Care Nurse Expert Witness Offer?

March 22, 2022 by Cardinal LifeCare Consulting

Receiving care from a team of attentive medical experts is vital to ensure the best possible outcome for a patient in critical condition. For a patient facing a life-threatening or otherwise catastrophic injury or illness who may have been the victim of negligence or malpractice, a critical care nurse expert witness may be called on to apply their specialized knowledge, assess the case and give testimony.

At Cardinal LifeCare Consulting, we connect attorneys on either side of litigation with diversely qualified medical professionals who possess the training and expertise needed to serve as impartial medical expert witnesses. Read on or call us at 724-487-0519 to learn more about us and the specific services offered by a nurse expert witness specializing in critical care scenarios.

What Services Does a Critical Care Nurse Expert Witness Offer?

For any legal matter involving a claim that medical malpractice or negligence led to patient harm, expert testimony is key to establish whether there are grounds for such an allegation. If the claim refers to care provided while the patient was in an unstable condition, a nurse with critical care experience is likely to be the most appropriate medical professional to review the case and deliver compelling, defensible testimony.

To find a reliable critical care nurse expert witness, look for someone with specialized training in this field, in one or more of the following settings:

  • Emergency room;
  • Intensive care unit;
  • Trauma care; and/or
  • Pediatric/newborn critical care unit (PICU/NICU).

As a result of their field experience, they will be deeply familiar with the standards of care applicable to these settings and thus will be qualified to provide an expert opinion on the critical care a particular patient received. Depending on the case, this may include the way in which the patient was assessed, the intervention provided, how they were monitored, how/when cardiopulmonary resuscitation was administered (in the case of cardiac arrest), etc. If any breaches of standard of care or other oversights occurred, a nurse expert witness will be able to identify and clearly explain them.
