When Are Birth Defects Diagnosed? Answers from a Certified Life Care Planner

November 11, 2018 by Cardinal LifeCare Consulting

When are birth defects diagnosedBirth defects can range from minor injuries to debilitating conditions that affect every aspect of life. Identifying these defects before birth can ensure the unborn child and mother receive prompt treatment, which in some cases can allow a child to live a normal life. If you’re wondering, “When are birth defects diagnosed?” this blog will provide some information.

If you’re involved in a case with an individual whose child has suffered a birth defect, you may be in need of life care planning or expert witness services. At Cardinal LifeCare Consulting, we offer both and can serve as a valuable ally during settlement negotiations or litigation. To learn more about our services, call us today at 724-487-0519.

First and Second Trimester Screening for Birth Defects

Typically, birth defects are diagnosed in screening tests conducted during pregnancy. These tests are performed during the first and second trimester.

  • During the first trimester, a doctor will check for any red flags indicating possible chromosomal disorders. Common signs of a defect include excess fluid behind the baby’s ear or abnormal protein levels in the blood.
  • During the second trimester, a doctor will once again conduct tests to determine if the baby has any chromosomal disorders. An anomaly ultrasound will also be performed to detect any defects in the baby’s size, proportions, and development.

In the event that these screenings reveal abnormalities in the baby’s development, or in cases involving high-risk pregnancies, healthcare providers may order extra tests such as high-resolution ultrasounds, amniocentesis, or chorionic villus sampling.

Unfortunately, doctors sometimes fail to perform these tests or they make an error that renders the results inaccurate. In other cases, they misinterpret the results. When a child suffers a birth defect that would have been diagnosed had the doctor exercised reasonable care, the mother of the child may have grounds for a medical malpractice claim.
