What is a life care plannerIn litigation concerning a personal injury, medical error or illness that has significant, long-lasting impacts on an individual’s life, a life care plan can be a case-defining resource. What is a life care planner, and what value can be added by consulting this professional to create a life care plan detailing the claimant’s needs and associated costs?

What Is a Life Care Planner?

A life care planner is a certified expert equipped with the right blend of medical and legal expertise to develop a comprehensive and well-reasoned life care plan. To deliver consistency and accuracy while creating this document, the professionals at Cardinal LifeCare adhere to a specific methodology, while also carefully personalizing each report according to unique circumstances.

Our team members complete the following steps to determine an individual’s medical and nonmedical needs and the costs of fulfilling them:

  • Carefully review the claimant’s medical records;
  • Perform relevant clinical research to understand the person’s condition, what needs they are likely to have as a result and what sums have been awarded in similar cases; and
  • Interview the individual to gain insight into how their chronic illness or injury affects them in their daily life.

After gathering this array of information, a life planner puts everything together to arrive at a full picture of the claimant’s needs and calculate a fair and sufficient dollar figure to meet them. This report may then be cited in court or settlement negotiations by an expert witness life care planner to justify the demand amount.

As a legal professional, in addition to wondering what is a life care planner, you may also be curious about the difference between a medical cost projection and a life care plan.

A life care plan goes into more detail than a medical cost projection, with more extensive research and an in-person interview with the injured or ill party. For reference, we typically recommend creation of a full life care plan for any case that may go to trial.
